Couples Therapy: an Interventional Approach
Couples therapy is a form of therapy that helps partners in a relationship to improve their communication, resolve conflicts, and deepen their connection with each other. The Gottman Method, developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, is a research-based approach to couples therapy that focuses on building and maintaining a strong, healthy relationship.

The Gottman Method is based on 40 years of scientific research and observations of thousands of couples. This research has identified key factors that predict relationship success or failure. By utilising this research, the Gottman Method helps couples to understand and work through their challenges and build a stronger, more fulfilling relationship.

In couples therapy using the Gottman Method, the therapist will work with the couple to identify their strengths and challenges, understand their patterns of communication and conflict resolution, and develop skills for building a strong, healthy relationship. Some of the key components of the Gottman Method include:
-
Improving Communication: The therapist will help couples to communicate effectively, listen actively, and express their feelings in a healthy way.
-
Resolving Conflicts: The therapist will work with the couple to understand and resolve conflicts in a constructive way, using strategies such as compromise and negotiation.
-
Building Intimacy: The therapist will help couples to deepen their connection by fostering intimacy and romance.
-
Understanding and Managing Emotions: The therapist will help couples to understand and manage their emotions, which can be a major source of conflict in relationships.
-
Overcoming Infidelity: The therapist will help couples to process the trauma often experienced aas the result of an affair and work with both partners to re-process unhelpful thoughts and feelings.

The Gottman Method is an effective approach to couples therapy, with studies showing that the majority of couples who receive therapy using this method experience significant improvements in their relationship. Whether you are facing challenges in your relationship or simply want to build a stronger, more fulfilling connection with your partner, the Gottman Method can help. At the Talking Therapies Centre in Penwortham we have two qualified therapists who use the Gottman Method at the core of their couples therapy.
